Boleskine V Lovat

This seasons campaign got off to a bad start at Kiltarlity against last years Scottish Junior Champions, Lovat.
We have managed to overcome last seasons dismal finish and put together a rather makeshift, start of season team. Alan Sumner, Craig Munro and Martin Paterson are all missing from our line-up this season and these key players will be sorely missed over the next few weeks.
We still have the quantity, but it means playing key players in less effective areas to cover for those players who served us well last season. We have a new local signing this season, Ewan MacAskill from Stratherrick, who was 'blooded' early in the first half when Barry Paterson had to leave the field through injury. He played well and can be satisfied with his first game for Boleskine.

The game was not as one side as expected. With Lovat's first team game cancelled, we knew they would be at full strength, but despite a number of first team players in their line up they did not dominate as might have been expected.
The main factors for our defeat did not include lack of effort and all the lads put up a good performance but we lacked the cut and thrust of a well honed forward line. We had periods of good pressure, but were unable to capitalise. We had to graft hard, it must be said and when your best players are grinding out openings, the conversion rate deteriorates.
Lovat played in units and exposed our failings in the defense running away with a victory which was well deserved over the ninety minutes.

Final score: Lovat 6 Boleskine 1

Boleskine V Kingussie

Despite being down on numbers for this game, we managed to put up a creditable performance against a young Kingussie side building for the future. The game was pretty even throughout with chances missed at both ends of the field, Kingussie being the more dominant team during the first forty five minutes. They went on to open the scoring through Paul Gow, with a well taken, thirty yard drive five minutes before half time.
The second half was more in our favor as far as possession was concerned, but we could not turn good moves into goals, despite no lack of effort. The game seemed to be heading for another poor statistic in the record books, when Lewis Smith popped up and despatched a well taken equalizer in the eighty sixth minute. Enough to save our blushes and secure our first point of the season.

Final score: Boleskine 1 Kingussie 1

Boleskine V Kilmallie

Another tough game today against a team who gave us no end of problems last season. We were not at full strength, yet again and had to rely on hard work and effort to get anything from this game.
The Kilmallie team started strongly with the breeze in their favour and quickly took the lead followed by two further goals within fifteen minutes. We replied through Steve Munro but they again countered with a a quickfire double to make the first half score 5-1 in Kilmallie's favour.
We began to press hard during the second half, but were caught napping within two minutes of the restart when they scored their sixth goal of the game through ken Kennedy, against the run of play. We controled the whole of the second half and added a further four goals, through Clive Girvan, Seve Munro(twice) and Lewis Smith but they were off the hook in eighty minutes when they were awarded a soft penalty, which was well converted. Despite more pressure and a goal chalked off for an infringement we could not reach the goal target needed to gain points on the day!

Final score: Boleskine 5 Kilmallie 8

Saturday September 16th

Glenurquhart V Boleskine

A 12 noon start for the game today and we were up against a very powerfully built team in the shape of Glenurquhart. Despite their lack of experience these young lads were not going to surrender easily and right from the start we knew we were going to be in for a tough physical encounter.
We did not settle until well into the first half and it was against the run of play that Lewis Smith scored the opening goal for us. From that point on, we began to dominate the game and with a better control of the mid field area. We stretched our lead in the thirty fifth minute, again through Lewis Smith but this was short lived as Glenurquhart narrowed the lead with a goal near the half-time whistle.
The second half started with Glenurquhart dominating proceedings in the mid field area but we again forged in front when Johnny Cameron scored a great goal from the edge of the penalty area. This settled the team and we were relieved when Lewis Smith completed his hat trick in the seventy first minute to virtually seal the points. The Glen did manage a further strike with ten minutes remaining but it was too late as we began to tie them up in mid field, ensuring little ball to their forwards for the remainder of the match.
A good result against a tough team who have a lot of potential and of course, our first win of the season!

Saturday September 30th

Boleskine V Kincraig

Boleskine were never 'at the races' in this match and Kincraig showed a level of commitment and determination that has us convinced they are strong contenders to sweep all the junior trophies open to them this season. We are normally comfortable with the tight confines of our own field at Foyers, but this was to be our downfall as the opposition gave us no breathing space or time to create any worthwhile moves. Steve Munro and Clive Girvan were missing from our line up, which did not help matters and we were put to the sword during a torrid first half, which ended five nil in their favour!
The second half was a little better but there was no way we were going to make up a five goal deficit, at least not today. We did manage to hit their post on three occasions during the second half with good shooting from Ian King, but this was during some of the few good attacks we had during the second period. Our day was summed up when they gained their sixth and last goal with a glorious overhead volley, beating our goal keeper, Jim Chisholm, all ends up. The only trouble, it was scored by one of our own players!!

Final score: Boleskine 0 Kincraig 6

This weeks game is away to Strathglass in the first round of the Strathdearn Cup (North Junior Championship). Lets hope for an improvement in attitude determination.

Saturday October 7th

Strathglass V Boleskine (Strathdearn Cup 1st Round)

Another poor result as we were defeated by Strathglass in this Strathdearn Cup first round match. Despite holding on for a 0 - 0 halftime scoreline, we were punished in the second half through some well taken goals from Strathglass veteran, Bruce Douglas. We were never able to sustain any forward pressure on their defence and in midfield we were lacking in depth and sheer effort.
Back to the drawing board for our next game and the the realization that we may not be the same team we were last season! Final score: Strathglass 4 Boleskine 0
